PORTLAND, OR – Labor and employment law firm Bullard Smith Jernstedt Wilson has moved its offices from the 1000 Broadway Building to the 200 SW Market Building in downtown Portland, Oregon. The relocation to 200 SW Market allows Bullard attorneys and staff to work in the first existing multi-tenanted office building in America to receive the LEED Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. The building now holds the highest possible sustainability rating, LEED Platinum, obtained in 2010.
As the primary occupant of the building's top floor, Bullard was able to maximize the 11,938 square-foot space by designing a layout that includes more shared areas to promote collaboration, as well as smaller individual offices. The firm worked with architect Steve Lapp of Waterleaf Architecture, project manager Cindy Gunderson and general contractor Howard S. Wright.
The move to a more efficient space is just the latest milestone in the firm's efforts to reduce its environmental footprint.
Under the leadership of the firm's "Green Team," Bullard implemented a central trash receptacle program, replaced disposable cups and utensils with durable kitchenware, switched to recycled paper and binders, and put in place incentive programs that offer employees cash payments for using alternatives to single-car commuting. Bullard recycles ink cartridges and toner, prints double-sided whenever possible, uses rechargeable batteries, purchases organically shade-grown coffee, and composts all organic food materials.
"We are extremely proud to serve clients from a best-in-class sustainable building," said Fran Barnwell, a shareholder and member of the firm's executive committee. "Our clients appreciate the firm's commitment to conserving natural resources, so the move makes sense from a client relations standpoint as well."
The 200 SW Market Building provides full recycling and composting, uses outside air for cooling and has automatic dimming lights to reduce electricity use. In addition to being near mass transit, the building offers on-site bike storage, locker rooms and showers to make the transition between home and work easier for bikers, walkers and runners.
